NORTHERN LIGHTS
The icing on the cake
A PERFECT NORTHERN LIGHTS VIEWING LODGE
Arctic Lapland is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights and the secluded location of Fjellborg Arctic Lodge makes it the perfect Northern Lights viewing destination.
We are away from the light pollution of towns and cities and from our peaceful lakeside location we have unobstructed views of the northern skies. The Northern Lights, or Auroras as they are also called, often accompany us on the trail and dance by the windows of our lodge when we are dining. If you are lucky, you will be able to watch the dazzling display from the comfort of the outdoor hot tub.
NORTHERN LIGHTS PEAK SEASON
Northern Lights occur throughout the year in Arctic Lapland but the sky has to be dark in order for them to be visible to the human eye. The dog sledding season largely coincides with the best conditions for viewing night sky phenomena, which is from November to late March. The beginning of April is generally a good time to spot Auroras but by mid-April the nights are getting shorter and the chances for catching the lights are smaller. The most spectacular displays tend to be accompanied by sub-zero temperatures and moonless skies. Often there is more activity close to midnight.
NORTHERN LIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHY
If you are interested in learning about Northern Lights photography we can arrange a hands-on class with a professional photographer at Fjellborg Arctic Lodge – please inform us at the time of booking. For best results, bring a camera with manual mode and a tripod, and don’t forget the extra memory card!
Even with the best planning there is no guarantee that you will be able to see the northern lights during your stay. However, if the sky is clear the photographer will show you how to take beautiful pictures of the Milky Way, which shimmers with incredible clarity in the dark polar sky.
